About the Author:

David Baer - A professor of theology and philosophy at Texas Lutheran University. His research focuses largely on religion in Eastern Europe, particularly in Hungary, where he lived between 1995 and 1998. His book The Struggle of Hungarian Lutherans under Communism examines the different strategies employed by Hungarian Lutherans to cope with political oppression. Recently he has have been studying the state of religious freedom in Hungary.

Ez a rövid könyv olyan cikkeket tartalmaz, amelyeket az utóbbi három évben írtam a magyar „vallásszabadsági” törvényre és az egyházak helyzetére vonatkozóan. Amint azt az olvasó szinte rögtön érzékelni fogja, a törvény kemény kritikusa vagyok. A magyarországi egyházügyi törvénya zzal, hogy szelektíven visszavont olyan jogokat, amelyekkel az állampolgárok korábban rendelkeztek és anakronisztikus jogi megkülönböztetést alkalmazott több vallási közösséggel szemben, fontos szerepet játszott a demokratikus intézményrendszer leépítésben, amelyért Orbán Viktor kormányát méltán éri kritika. A következő esszék véleményem szerint meggyőzően bizonyítják ezt. Ennek ellenére szeretném, hogy ez a könyv a remény szellemében jelenjen meg. Először is, remélem hogy a magyarországi bevett egyházak a törvény nyilván való hibáit felismerve jobban megértik majd, hogy a vallásszabadság nem csak a liberális társadalom, hanem a keresztény demokrácia eszméjének alapja is. English Summary:

This short book contains articles I have written over the last three years in response to Hungary’s new law on “freedom of religion” and the status of churches. As the reader will quickly discern, I am one of this law’s severe critics.  By selectively revoking rights Hungarian citizens had once secured, and by introducing a historically anachronistic system of legal discrimination against many religious communities, Hungary’s law on religion has been an integral part of the devolution of democratic institutions for which Viktor Orbán’s government is rightly criticized.  The essays that follow will, in my view, demonstrate this conclusively.  Even so, I publish this book in a spirit of hope.  First, my hope is that Hungary’s established churches, confronted again with this law’s egregious shortcomings, will come to appreciate more fully that religious freedom is a cornerstone not only of liberal society, but also of the ideal of Christian democracy.
