The Maestro - that's simply how Ennio Morricone was called in the profession, who in his homeland is not only the pride of Italy, but also the composer of the century. His masterpieces composed for hundreds of films still resonate in people's ears today. Most of his music outgrew the films, took on an independent life, and became the leader of hit and record lists. The Maestro's talent, which knows no genre limits, was shown in comedy, drama, and crime just as much as in science fiction, horror, or war stories. Without a doubt, Morricone was an unavoidable figure in the film world: he voiced in notes what was manifested on the film strip, and even with musical effects he often improved the possible shortcomings of either the script or the visual presentation. That is why he became the Maestro, whose work was honored with an Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In truth, however, he was not the least bit interested in glory. The extremely modest musician was swept away by all praise. He was an infinitely humble man who dedicated his whole life to composing for the entertainment of the public.
Through interesting stories, the book presents the boy who was considered a prodigy at school after learning music at the age of six. Ennio - who actually wanted to be a doctor - often played the trumpet in night bars to support his poor family. During the war, it often happened that they had nothing to eat. Initially working under the pseudonyms Dan Savio and Leo Nichols, the composer believed that his music came from a mysterious, extraterrestrial world. We follow this world in order to learn the secrets of the composer of the century and also to decipher why the world-famous Italian composer, who loved the Hungarians in an extraordinary way, said: "My heart belongs to Budapest!"

A Maestro - egyszerűen csak így hívták a szakmában Ennio Morriconét, akit hazájában nemcsak Olaszország büszkeségeként, de az évszázad zeneszerzőjeként is emlegetnek. Filmek százaihoz komponált remekművei ma is visszacsengenek az emberek fülében. Zenéinek többsége jócskán túlnőtt a filmeken, önálló életre kelt, sláger- és lemezlisták éllovasa lett. A műfaji korlátokat nem ismerő Maestro tehetsége vígjátékban, drámában, krimiben éppúgy megmutatkozott, mint sci-fiben, horrorfilmben vagy épp háborús történetben. Morricone kétségkívül a filmvilág megkerülhetetlen alakja volt: hangjegyekben szólaltatta meg azt, ami a filmszalagon megnyilvánult, sőt a zenei hatásokkal sokszor javított akár a forgatókönyv, akár a képi megjelenítés esetleges hiányosságain. Ezért is lett ő a Maestro, akinek munkásságát 2007-ben Oscar-életműdíjjal honorálták. Valójában azonban a legkevésbé sem érdekelte a dicsőség. A rendkívül szerény muzsikusról lepergett minden magasztalás. Végtelenül alázatos ember volt, aki egész életét arra tette fel, hogy a közönség szórakoztatására komponáljon.
A könyv érdekes történeteken keresztül mutatja be azt a kisfiút, akit az iskolában csodagyerekként tartottak számon, miután hatévesen már zenét szerzett. Ennio - aki valójában orvos szeretett volna lenni - sokszor éjszakai bárokban trombitált, hogy eltartsa szegénysorban tengődő családját. A háború alatt ugyanis gyakran előfordult, hogy nem volt mit enniük. A kezdetekben Dan Savio és Leo Nichols álnéven dolgozó zeneszerző úgy vélte, zenéi egy titokzatos, földöntúli világból jönnek. Ennek a világnak a nyomába eredünk, hogy megismerjük az évszázad zeneszerzőjének titkait és megfejtsük azt is, hogy a magyarokat rendkívüli módon szerető világhírű olasz komponista miért nyilatkozta azt, hogy: „A szívem Budapesté!"
