About the Author

John Calvin (10 July 1509 – 27 May 1564) was a significant French theologian, pastor, and reformer during the Protestant Reformation. A Református Egyházi Könyvtár újabb két kötete Kálvin páli levelekhez írt magyarázatainak sorát teszi teljessé: a Galata levéltől a Thesszalonikai levelekig. A kommentárok Szabó András klasszika-filológus kéziratban fennmaradt, valamint Nagy Sándor Béla Kálvin-kutató átdolgozott fordításai mellett Bellus Ibolya és Vladár Gábor új fordításában olvashatók.

Kálvin a Filippi levél magyarázata során kiemeli Pál apostol eljárását: „...hogy mondanivalóját szívesebben fogadják (...), kinyilvánítja irántuk érzett nagy szeretetét.” A levél tartalma arra utal, hogy ez nem csupán retorikai fogás, hanem a keresztyén élet döntő mozzanata, mert ahol a szíveknek egyesülniük kell a kölcsönös szeretetben, ott „ugyanúgy gondolkodva” kell kölcsönös szeretetre jutni.
