A Fistful of Dollars (Italian: Per un pugno di dollari, lit. 'For a Fistful of Dollars' titled on-screen as Fistful of Dollars) is a 1964 Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood in his first leading role, alongside John Wells, Marianne Koch, W. Lukschy, S. Rupp, Jose Calvo, Antonio Prieto, and Joe Edger. The film, an international co-production between Italy, West Germany, and Spain, was filmed on a low budget (reported to be $200,000), and Eastwood was paid $15,000 for his role.

Released in Italy in 1964 and then in the United States in 1967, it initiated the popularity of the Spaghetti Western genre. It was followed by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, also starring Eastwood. Collectively, the films are known as the "Dollars Trilogy", or the "Man with No Name Trilogy" after the United Artists publicity campaign referred to Eastwood's character in all three films as the "Man with No Name". All three films were later released in sequence in the United States in 1967, catapulting Eastwood into stardom. The film has been identified as an unofficial remake of the Akira Kurosawa film Yojimbo (1961), which resulted in a successful lawsuit by Toho, Yojimbo's production company.

An unnamed strangerarrives at the little town of San Miguel, on the Mexico–United States border. Silvanito, the town's innkeeper, tells the Stranger about a feud between two smuggler families vying to gain control of the town: the Rojo brothers (Don Miguel, Esteban and Ramón), and the family comprising town sheriff John Baxter, his matriarchal wife Consuelo, and their son Antonio. The Stranger (in order to make money) decides to play these families against each other. He demonstrates his speed and accuracy with his gun, to both sides, by shooting with ease the four men who insulted him as he entered town.

Per un pugno di dollari è un film del 1964, il primo della cosiddetta trilogia del dollaro, diretta da Sergio Leone e interpretata da Clint Eastwood, che comprende anche Per qualche dollaro in più (1965) e Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966).

Caposaldo del genere spaghetti western, viene erroneamente considerato il primo film del genere: in Europa, prima del 1964 erano già usciti diversi western di questo tipo, senza però riscontrare lo stesso successo. Remake non dichiarato di La sfida del samurai (Yojimbo) di Akira Kurosawa, Per un pugno di dollari reinventò il genere western, ormai in declino, ridefinendone gli archetipi. La colonna sonora, che ebbe un grande successo anche sul mercato discografico, è celebre per il brano fischiato, eseguito dal maestro Alessandro Alessandroni.

In una data imprecisata a fine Ottocento, un pistolero solitario, che sarà chiamato da un altro personaggio "Joe" in alcune scene, arriva a cavallo di un mulo a San Miguel, una cittadina al confine tra gli Stati Uniti d'America e il Messico. All'ingresso, viene accolto dallo strano campanaro del paese, Juan De Dios, che prevede sarcastico che lo Straniero misterioso, come tutti gli uomini a San Miguel, diverrà estremamente ricco o morirà entro breve tempo. Lo Straniero prende alloggio alla locanda del paese, dove diventa amico del proprietario Silvanito. Per via della sua cavalcatura e del suo bizzarro abbigliamento viene preso in giro da tre uomini, che però fredda istantaneamente tre rapidi colpi di pistola, quando si rifiutano di scusarsi. Da Silvanito viene a sapere della lotta tra le due famiglie dominanti della città: i fratelli Rojo, ovvero Don Benito (il fratello maggiore, capo della famiglia), Esteban (elemento poco intelligente e vigliacco, anello debole dei tre) e Ramón (sanguinario criminale, abilissimo nell'uso del fucile) e la famiglia di John Baxter, sceriffo della città, per cui lavoravano le tre vittime del pistolero. I Rojo sono commercianti di alcolici, che commerciano principalmente con gli indiani, mentre i Baxter vendono armi, anche agli eserciti dei due Paesi; le forze delle due famiglie si equivalgono e nessuna riesce a prevalere sull'altra.
