In the aftermath of the Champ-de-Mars shooting on July 17, 1791, jugglers undertake to play the main events of the two years that have just passed: from the meeting of the States General to the proclamation of martial law, passing by the storming of the Bastille, the Great Fear, and the night of August 4. In a great popular jubilation, they try to show the diversion of hopes, the explosion of joy then the collapse of the dream of equal rights. To do this, the jugglers use all theatrical forms, from pantomime to tragedy, from puppets to opéra-bouffe. They thus represent the important or humble characters of this decisive year and take on their account the sentence of Saint-Just: “The revolution must stop at the perfection of happiness.
